Man United have to set aside financial concerns and pursue £18 million deal for 18-goal Premier League striker in January - opinion

Manchester United look to be keen on making a move in the striker department before the January transfer window closes.

It’s not the first time that Manchester United have been scrounging around the market looking for a short-term striker signing to ease their fears in that position.

Wout Weghorst and Odion Ighalo have been brought in, in recent seasons, but there hasn’t really been a striker who has been heavily linked with the Red Devils this month, even though there are good options.

However, with the recent news of an injury to Anthony Martial, which is set to keep him out for 10 weeks, like the Marcel Sabitzer signing, this has to have changed United’s thinking.

Callum Wilson mentioned

A report from the Evening Standard has linked Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United with the signing of Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson with Eddie Howe’s side ready to offload the Englishman.

His injury problems have been a cause of concern for the Geordie side as he has missed 12 games this season already and another forward, like Martial, with injury problems may well be a deal the Red Devils should avoid.

However, due to the financial situation that Newcastle are currently in, Newcastle may be forced to sell this month and Wilson is said to be available for just £18 million.

Whether United, due to their own Financial Fair Play concerns, would have the facilities to push through a deal remains to be seen but they should surely try.

Why Wilson would be brilliant for United

His injury problems aside, what the Red Devils have really lacked this season is a proven Premier League goalscorer at the highest level.

Wilson has seven goals in 14 Premier League games for the Geordie side this campaign and his numbers surely make him an appealing prospect for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Rasmus Hojlund has netted just twice in the league for the Red Devils since his move from Atalanta and perhaps having an experienced striker who can come in and play 20 games, would take the pressure off the Danish international.

Wilson netted 18 league goals last campaign and averages 0.75 non-penalty goals per 90, which ranks him as the sixth best across Europe’s top divisions, according to FBREF.

According to the statistics website, the striker that the Englishman is most similar to is Erling Haaland. Wilson wouldn’t have the same impact as the Norwegian has had for City but he would be a worthwhile addition.

At just £18 million, with potential room for manoeuvrability on that price due to Newcastle’s struggles, this would represent a steal for the Red Devils.

At 31, Wilson would not just be a six-month stop-gap. He could potentially have two-and-a-half seasons at the club, supporting Hojlund, and another young striker too.
