'Within 24 hours': Ex £40m Man United man set for £2.5m move just 18 months after OT exit

Nemanja Matic is set to seal a £2.5 million move to Lyon 18 months after his time at Premier League giants Manchester United came to an end.

While the veteran Serbian, by his own admission, left Old Trafford during the summer of 2022 ‘after a great deal of thought’, one suspects it won’t have taken him quite so long to pack his bags and bid a rather curt farewell to Roazhon Park.

Nemanja Matic won’t forget his time at Rennes any time soon, and we don’t mean that in a good way. His brief, half-season stint in Brittany will be remembered less for Matic’s performances on the pitch but a rather unseemly despite off it, the midfielder accusing Rennes of broken promises while the Ligue 1 outfit hit out at his ’incomprehensible behaviour’ via an official statement (GetFranceFootballNews).

And while Matic appeared to row back on his criticism of the club a little white later, it will come as no surprise to hear that a man who once set Manchester United back £40 million is about to cut ties with Les Rouge et Noirs.

Nemanja Matic set for Lyon switch

Lyon, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins writes on X, should be in a position to unveil the veteran before the clock strikes midnight on Saturday.

“Everything is complete for the arrival of Nemanja Matic,” Hawkins explains. “(His contract will be) until June 2026.

“Compensation (fee) of around three million euros. (Matic is) expected in Lyon within 24 hours.”

Midfielder’s post-Man United career not going to plan

Matic joins former Arsenal duo Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alexandre Lacazette, plus ex-Southampton loanee Duje Caleta-Car, at a Lyon side hovering nervously just above the Ligue 1 drop zone.

The one-time Chelsea and Benfica enforcer was also linked with a move to Fulham earlier in the window. A move which would have seen him reunite with Andreas Pereira, sometimes Matic’s midfield partner during the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era.
