Man Utd fans all baffled after Scott McTominay’s performance vs Wigan, the reaction says it all

Furious Manchester United fans are baffled at Scott McTominay’s performance against Wigan on Monday evening in the third round of the FA Cup at the DW Stadium.

McTominay has scored five times in 17 Premier League appearances for United this season, with the Scottish midfielder also scoring once in the Champions League.

Despite his impressive goalscoring output this season, McTominay has often been criticised by United fans for his overall contributions to his side’s performances.

The 27-year-old United star started alongside Kobbie Mainoo in the heart of midfield for the clash against Wigan, with McTominay enduring a tough time in the first half.

McTominay doesn’t impress against Wigan

McTominay was lively in the first half when it came to his attacking output and the Scotland international could have scored a hat-trick before half-time.

However, the United midfielder’s shooting boots were well off the mark against Wigan and fans were furious with his lacklustre finishing in the FA Cup tie.

United fans were equally frustrated with McTominay ‘snatching’ a clear chance from Rasmus Hojlund, who failed to score in the first half for the Red Devils as well.

Footage from the match also made the rounds of Mainoo playing an active role in midfield and tackling for the ball, only for McTominay to kick the ball right at him.

Journalist Jonas Adnan Giaever wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he counted at “least three times” when Mainoo ‘cleaned up’ after McTominay.

United fans’ reaction to McTominay’s performance

United fans on social media platform X accused McTominay of being “invisible” and “hidden” in his midfield performance in the third-round FA Cup clash against Wigan.

While McTominay actively played a part in the final third – although he failed to score in the tie – fans felt he offered very little when compared with Mainoo.

“McTominay is invisible, then robs the ball off Hojlund because he thinks he’s a striker, FFS,” one fan said.

Somebody else commented: “Look how high McTominay is playing, completely ruining the dynamic of the team, FFS.”

A third added: “McTominay [has] made me shout in an empty room. He is a horrid experience to watch.”

And another posted: “If Scott McTominay can’t score, then he shouldn’t be playing.”

While a fifth wrote: “McTominay is truly the antithesis of football.”

“Mainoo covering for McTominay being dreadful,” a sixth tweeted.

One fan argued: “18-year-old Mainoo demanding the ball at every opportunity [while] 27-year-old McTominay has hidden for 25 minutes, this is football heritage.”
