'Spectacular': £47 million Man United 'leader' praised by national team manager

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been described as a leader and has made spectacular progress, according to Roberto Martinez.

It has been a tough season for Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes but as we approach four years since the Red Devils signed the attacking midfielder, the Portuguese star deserves credit.

In recent weeks, the midfielder has got back to somewhere near his best, specifically in the club’s FA Cup run with the United captain being vital for the Red Devils.

Fernandes was awarded the United captaincy in the summer but the club have struggled to build on last season’s third-place finish and are now set to miss out on Champions League football.

Martinez on Fernandes

Despite the club’s struggles, for his national team this season, Fernandes has been superb and it seems Roberto Martinez, who is the manager of Portugal, is a big fan of the former Sporting Lisbon star.

“I think Bruno Fernandes had a spectacular qualifying campaign,” Martinez told Portuguese outlet A Bola. “Bruno is a leader. He has a lot of leadership. But I think that respect between the players allows us to be happy on the pitch. We need five or six players who are leaders.

“I think that in relation to what the opposition is proposing, we can use Bruno, we can use Bernardo, in totally different situations. And that’s important for our tactical flexibility that we’re talking about. If we don’t have the players to be able to do that, it doesn’t make sense.”

Fernandes’ flexibility, whether it’s playing deeper or on the right-hand side has been a trait appreciated by Erik ten Hag with the 29-year-old often featuring in different positions to accommodate other players.

Four years of Fernandes

As mentioned, we are approaching four years to the day since United, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, signed Fernandes after weeks of a protracted saga.

Since then, Fernandes has to be in the running for the best signing made at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as he has 71 goals and 59 assists in 229 appearances for the Red Devils.

He deserves all the credit he receives in a United shirt and if he continues down this current path, he will go down as a Red Devils legend.
