Straight red card - Man United loanee sent off just 50 minutes into first 2024 match

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has been sent off just 50 minutes into his first apparance of 2024 with the Premier League loanee given his marching orders in Getafe’s defeat by Rayo Vallecano.

If the England international was hoping to pick where he had left off before Christmas – Mason Greenwood slowly but surely rediscovering the form which had once made him a player of such promise at Manchester United – then he’d have been best advised keeping his mouth shut.

Greenwood, so impressive in recent outings for Getafe, lasted less than an hour as La Liga returned following the festive break on Tuesday. He picked up a straight red card after being accused of dissent, and could now face a four match ban as a result (Football Espana).

Mason Greenwood sent off

Remarkably, Getafe – never a side to shirk a fight under Jose Bordalas – ended the match with just eight men on the field, Greenwood one of three to see red (metaphorically and literally) during an eventual 2-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

This, then, is the undoubted low point of an otherwise impressive loan spell in Madrid for the Manchester United academy graduate. Greenwood had scored three goals and set up four more in his previous 10 La Liga starts, with a scintillating performance in December’s 3-3 draw with Atletico Madrid drawing praise from one Antoine Griezmann.

Getafe president Angel Torres has expressed his desire to keep Greenwood at the Coliseum, but that feels like wishful thinking given that the club’s pockets are not exactly the deepest.

According to 90Min, Barcelona, Atletico, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have been keeping tabs on Greewood during his time in the Spanish capital.

‘A Real Madrid-level player’

“He looks now to be nearing full fitness and he’s going to be an incredible asset to Getafe,” Spanish football expert Terry Gibson, himself a former Man United forward, told El Tel and Jon’s La Liga Weekly podcast.

“He shouldn’t be at Getafe in terms of the quality and the level of his play. You look at him and you think; ‘That is a Barcelona or Real Madrid-level player’.”
