Wigan's Ben Amos praises one Manchester United star on X after flawless FA Cup performance

Ex-Manchester United academy graduate and current Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Ben Amos was full of praise for one Red Devils player in particular.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United advanced through to the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup after goals from Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes were enough for the victory over Wigan Athletic.

Despite the victory, the Red Devils should have won by a greater margin as they had ample opportunities to put the game beyond doubt before half-time.

United got the victory in the end but there was one player in particular who impressed and has continued to be the surprise package for United this season.

Mainoo stars

Kobbie Mainoo has been the player of the season for United this campaign and the fact he deserves this accolade based on two months of football says a lot about the current state of the Red Devils’ first team.

At just 18 years of age, the English midfielder is continuing to prove why he is trusted by Ten Hag as the teenager, alongside Scott McTominay, was the better of the two players as Mainoo had to rescue the Scottish star on a couple of occasions.

Writing on social media platform X, former United academy graduate goalkeeper Ben Amos wrote about the teenage midfielder and simply said: “Mainoo, 18-year-old that’s the standard (with a surprised emoji)”.

The midfielder completed 61 of his 68 attempted passes, completed both of his attempted take-ons and won 10 out of 13 ground duels on the evening.

Mainoo impresses again

The teenage midfielder was not given the man-of-the-match award at the DW Stadium as Dalot was awarded with the accolade due to his brilliant first-half goal.

Mainoo’s teammate Alejandro Garnacho was full of praise for his teammate after the game, too, replying to his Instagram post, “Man of the match again,” with a laughing emoji and goat emoji.

The 18-year-old is now surely set to be a starter for the remainder of the season and he more than deserves this, he has been the club’s best midfielder this campaign.
