Erik ten Hag explains exactly why he has started Marcus Rashford against Wolves

Manchester United take on Wolves in the Premier League tonight and Erik ten Hag has decided to start Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils are on the road in the Premier League, as they face a tough trip to Molineux.

The big news coming out before kick-off is that Marcus Rashford is in the starting XI, despite the disciplinary issues in midweek.

The manager has explained exactly why this is the case.

Why Marcus Rashford is playing against Wolves

Ten Hag was asked before the fixture on TNT Sports as to why he had chosen to start the England international – to which he responded:

“We didn’t select him on Sunday; he has taken responsibility, and the case is closed. We move on.”

Fair enough from Ten Hag, but did he really have a choice?

Manchester United are lacking forward options

Rashford is still undeniably one of Manchester United‘s most important players, despite his form this season. On his day, Rashford is a world-beater.

United are also severely lacking forward options. If Rasmus Hojlund were to get injured, we would have no striker – meaning it’s best just to have the whole Rashford debacle this week blow over.

Wolves is a big fixture

Besides, you want your best players in the biggest games – and Wolves is an important fixture for the Red Devils.

A win for Manchester United, or in fact, a draw would see them shoot up the Premier League table. They currently sit in 9th, but anything other than a defeat will ensure they move up to 7th.

A win would also leave them just eight points off the Champions League places. It’s quite an important fixture, and one United should be winning if they’re serious about Europe next season. Come on United!
