Manchester United finally look set to sign Matthijs de Ligt, five years after he was first linked back in 2019.
A lot has happened since. Matthijs de Ligt chose instead to leave Ajax for Juventus, won the league in Serie A alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, before joining Bayern Munich and winning the Bundesliga there too.
During that time, not only did Ronaldo return to Manchester United and leave, his former Ajax teammate Donny van de Beek has had an unhappy four year spell at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek has now finally been sold, with Girona confirming he has signed with the Champions League newcomers.
Matthijs de Ligt reacts to Donny van de Beek exit
Donny van de Beek’s spell at Manchester United is over. He spent two unhappy loan spells at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt, and never once looked like the player he was at Ajax.
Van de Beek’s confidence looked shattered during this time and he now has a fresh start in La Liga.
The Dutchman could not wait to leave. Van de Beek announced his goodbye before undergoing his medical and sealing his move.
Now he has shared an update posing with the Girona shirt, proving his move is 100 per cent official.
Van de Beek received congratulations messages and good luck wishes from former Manchester United colleagues.
Sofyan Amrabat, Mason Mount and Amad, a trio who barely shared a pitch with him, yet wanted to wish him well all the same.
There was another very timely message – from Matthijs de Ligt, his former Ajax teammate.
De Ligt left a heart emoji and an applause emoji in response, making clear he is rooting for his fellow Dutchman.
Van de Beek troubles not spooking De Ligt
Van de Beek’s career hit the skids at Manchester United. This is not seemingly spooking Matthijs de Ligt.
De Ligt has told Bayern Munich he wants to join the Red Devils, and his move is expected to be wrapped up after Joshua Zirkzee’s.
Part of the attraction for De Ligt is reuniting with Erik ten Hag, who made him Ajax’s youngest ever captain.
With United looking for a replacement for Raphael Varane, the timing looks perfect for De Ligt to join, even if he won’t have Van de Beek to show him around Manchester, there will be no shortage of Dutchmen.
