Report claims Manchester United ready to fight Arsenal for £30m striker, surely a Zirkzee contingency plan

Manchester United are in the market for a new striker this summer and Erik ten Hag appears to be closing in on his top target.

Rasmus Hojlund arrived from Atalanta last summer as Manchester United put real faith in the young Dane.

Hojlund showed real potential in his first season at Old Trafford but certainly needs more help around him in attack.

Anthony Martial was a non-factor for United last season and has now left the club on a free transfer.

Competition in attack is needed with Hojlund simply too raw to be taking on the attacking workload on his own.

United continue to be linked with potential striking additions this summer and one familiar name has again been linked.

Brian Brobbey linked with Manchester United

Erik ten Hag’s former players are regularly linked with United.

Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat have all reunited with Ten Hag at Old Trafford in the last two years.

Another one could arrive this summer in Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt and Brian Brobbey has now been linked once again.

The Sun claim that United are ‘set for a £30million war’ over the signing of Ajax striker Brobbey.

It’s suggested that Brobbey ‘has his heart set’ on a move to the Premier League and Ten Hag is interested having coached him at Ajax.

When Ten Hag left Ajax for United in the summer of 2022, Brobbey joked that he would want Ten Hag to take him to Old Trafford.

Brobbey smashed 18 goals in 30 Eredivisie games this past season and is now with the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024.

The 22-year-old is a real physical threat in attack and Ten Hag certainly knows all about his abilities.

United go for Joshua Zirkzee instead

We can understand some level of interest in Brobbey given Ten Hag’s knowledge of the striker but a transfer ‘war’ is something we can’t see happening.

That is because United already appears to have picked out the top striking target – and it’s one of Brobbey’s Dutch teammates.

Bologna hitman Joshua Zirkzee is the man United want and a deal is thought to be close.

Fabrizio Romano claims that United are ‘one step away’ from signing Zirkzee thanks to a £34million release clause in his contract.

If United get a deal over the line for Zirkzee, then there would be absolutely no need to sign Brobbey too.

Perhaps United are just keeping Brobbey on the radar as a backup target just in case the Zirkzee move falters.

We can’t see that happening though and believe that Zirkzee will be the man United sign, leaving Brobbey to potentially head elsewhere.
