Manchester United are hoping to bring in a couple of centre back signings this summer but Ineos could make a fascinating move for Nice.
Erik ten Hag is now accelerating Manchester United’s transfer plans as the new Premier League season looms large.
The Dutchman has kept his job despite a disappointing Premier League campaign and is now being backed with new additions this summer.
Bayern Munich centre back Matthijs de Ligt looks likely to join this summer having told the Bundesliga giants that he wants the move to Old Trafford.
United are looking at other options too though and a second offer has been submitted – and turned down – for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.
An offer has been accepted for Lille’s Leny Yoro but the teenager is believed to prefer a move to Real Madrid instead.
Ineos want Teden Mengi at Nice
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co will be focusing on funding two centre back signings at Old Trafford this summer, whilst also chasing centre back signings for Nice.
Nice – owned by Ineos – may lose Jean-Clair Todibo this summer, though he is being prevented from signing for United this summer.
Foot Mercato now report that Nice have identified a potential centre back additions – and it’s a player who left United last year.
It’s stated that Nice are ‘very interested’ in signing Teden Mengi after he suffered relegation from the Premier League with Luton Town.
The report claims that Fulham are also keen with Luton demanding around €12million to €14million (£10million to £12million) for Mengi’s signature.
Mengi hails from Manchester and joined the United ranks at the age of just seven.
First-team appearances were hard to come by though and after two senior displays – alongside loan spells to Derby County and Birmingham City – United decided to move Mengi on permanently last summer.
Luton secured a deal and Mengi showed quality and potential in the Hatters back line despite their relegation to the Championship, even being branded a ‘revelation’ by boss Rob Edwards.
Manchester United hold Mengi sell-on clause
Mengi us now attracting major interest with Luton’s gamble on the defender certainly paying dividends.
United will be paying close attention though as reports earlier this year suggested that there is a ‘significant’ sell-on clause in the deal.
This was of interest back in February with Bayer Leverkusen showing an interest and potentially sending some money into the United coffers.
Fast forward a few months and Mengi is worth even more now, meaning United could stand to take a healthy chunk of cash from any deal.
Ineos will be well aware of this factor as they weigh up bringing Mengi to Nice; it may not be a window-changing amount for United, but every little helps with many positions in Ten Hag’s squad needing attention.
