Manchester United didn’t bring in a new winger this summer but did appear to have one big-money target in mind – and wanted Sir Alex Ferguson to help.
Ineos were leading their first summer transfer window over the last couple of months and can be pleased with the business they pulled off.
Manchester United’s first signing of the summer was a striker as Joshua Zirkzee joined from Bologna before United snapped up wonderkid Leny Yoro from Lille.
Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui signed from Bayern Munich together and Manuel Ugarte arrived on deadline day after weeks of speculation.
There will always be some deals which didn’t quite work out though and one such move is now emerging in the media…

Manchester United wanted Michael Olise
Many United fans wanted to see another winger arrive to bolster Erik ten Hag’s options on the flanks.
Antony hasn’t lived up to expectations and Marcus Rashford’s form was up and down at best last season.
United have been searching for a right-sided solution for a while now and one potential signing was in mind for that exact position.
The Daily Mail claim that United were ‘smitten’ with the idea of signing winger Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.
It’s suggested that United enquired and ready to call on Sir Alex Ferguson to help convince Olise to join.
Ferguson is an absolute legend of the game and United seemingly wanted him to get in contact with Olise to really sell him on a move to Old Trafford.
However, United were ‘too late’ as Olise had already decided that he wanted to join Bayern Munich and completed a £60million move not long after.
One interesting note is that the Mail claim United would be ‘at the front of the queue’ for Olise if he moves on from Bayern in the future.
United don’t appear to have fully forgotten about Olise just yet and may well make a new move to sign the Frenchman down the line.
Amad Diallo could be the future on the right flank
Olise was superb at Crystal Palace and it was no surprise to see him land a huge move to Bayern with Ralf Rangnick hailing him as an ‘exceptional’ player.
United now have to forge on without Olise and will now hope to see Amad Diallo kick in that right-sided role.
The Ivorian has started the season well and scored in the 2-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion.
Amad is not the finished product just yet and he actually lost his place to Alejandro Garnacho against Liverpool.
Garnacho would prefer to play on the left flank though and unless Rashford steps up his performances, there is a real chance that we see Garnacho and Amad on the flanks.
If United had signed Olise, Amad’s chances of becoming a first-team star would have been severely hampered for years to come.
Olise is seemingly still on United’s radar though and Amad needs to now show that he can become the future on the right wing and leave Olise as a target of the past.
