Manchester United fans have dropped a clear-cut verdict on Diogo Dalot after his showing against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
The Red Devils returned to winning ways during the week with their 2-1 comeback win against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday at the Doosan Arena in the Czech Republic.
Manchester United had slipped to back-to-back Premier League defeats against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal ahead of Thursday’s Europa League win.
Ruben Amorim has had a mixed start to life as United manager since his arrival at Old Trafford from Sporting CP at the start of the November break.
The 39-year-old Portuguese manager has managed one win, one draw and two defeats in his first four Premier League matches in charge of United.
United have suffered a shocking Premier League campaign so far, with former Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag dismissed in late October after a poor start to the season.
Dalot disappoints for Man Utd against Man City
Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot was a standout performer for Erik ten Hag during the 2023-24 Premier League campaign.
The 25-year-old Portugal international made 50 appearances for the Red Devils last season and Dalot earned high praises for his consistency and performances.
Dalot’s impressive run of form ahead of the 2024-25 Premier League season earned the United star the Players’ Player of the Year award.
However, the Portugal defender has endured a lacklustre campaign at United and Dalot failed to impress against Manchester City at the Etihad.
Dalot, who has played on both flanks, was deployed out on the left as a wing-back in Ruben Amorim’s system and he offered very little in attack against City.
The United right-back also failed to deny Josko Gvardiol for City’s first-half opener after the Croatian centre-back fired his header past Andre Onana in the 36th minute.
Man Utd fans react to Dalot’s performance vs Man City
United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, slammed Dalot for his overall performance in the Manchester derby at the Etihad.
Red Devils supporters were deeply critical of Dalot’s passing and crossing, including questioning what the United full-back offered defensively and attacking-wise.
United fans felt that Dalot should be sold and he did not fit in Amorim’s system, while others claimed that the defender left the Red Devils at a “disadvantage.”
One fan said: “Really don’t see what Dalot offers in defence or attack. He’s been lucky on the technicality of all our other full-backs never being fit otherwise he would never have started this many [matches].”
Somebody else wrote: “Luke Shaw may be injury prone, but he is one of best at crosses, TBF. Can’t see Dalot skyers [sic] every week.”
“Dalot should never play for United again, sell him in January,” a third X user tweeted.
Another posted: “Any movers out in Manchester? Please help Dalot pack his things – he needs to be leaving.”
“Dalot can’t be part of this new system if it is to succeed,” a fifth commented.
While a sixth added: “Playing with Dalot is such a disadvantage. It’s like playing with 10 men. Can’t defend. Rubbish going forward. Pointless footballer.”
“Dalot can’t beat a man or put in an accurate cross,” somebody else tweeted.
An eighth said: “[We] NEED a left-footed wing-back. Dalot always looking to turn back onto his right foot. It’s so predictable and easy to defend.”
