Manchester United are close to signing an 18-year-old player who could end up replacing Mason Mount.
Football can be a cruel sport sometimes, and right now Mason Mount will feel it is treating him unfairly.
It is difficult not to feel for the 25-year-old and his recurrent injury problems which have totally derailed his career at Manchester United during his first two seasons at the club.
Ruben Amorim has admitted he loves Mount, which had fans believing the man who cost £55m from Chelsea would finally come good. But it was not to be.
Just a week ago, Mount was excellent in the win over Plzen. He played his way into the starting line-up against Manchester City, only for injury to strike and force Mount off the pitch in the 12th minute.
Now, one January target for United could be the replacement and a sign of an acceptance over Mount.
Sverre Nypan is the ideal Mason Mount replacement
Ahead of what looks set to be a quiet January transfer window for United, one deal which is progressing is the pursuit of Rosenborg’s Sverre Nypan.
United are closing in on Nypan, with the club long being interested in signing Norway’s next big talent. After the remarkable campaign Nypan has had, a January move looks all but confirmed – as United lead the £10m race for his signature.
If Nypan does arrive in January, there is a very clear place where he can be deployed.
In Amorim’s team, the two No.10 positions are crucial with Amad Diallo locking one down. The left-side currently belongs to Bruno Fernandes. However, below this, Amorim seems to favour a fit Mount as an option to Marcus Rashford, who looks set for a January exit – and also Alejandro Garnacho.
So with Mount’s injury and likely future injuries, Nypan could be perfect to come in and take the role away from Mount of deputising Bruno initially.
Ruben Amorim could turn Nypan into a star for Manchester United
So as Nypan looks more and more likely to leave Rosenborg for Old Trafford, it is worth looking at what makes him so special. Amorim would be getting not only a talent, but Nypan is also a boyhood United fan and still is today.
This would in theory give Nypan the mentality that Amorim wants in his team, having outlined his desire for his players to ‘run like dogs’.
Statistic | # | Percentile among midfield peers in Eliteserien |
Games | 28 | N/A |
Goals | 8 | 96th percentile |
Assists | 7 | 97th percentile |
Chances created | 38 | 89th percentile |
Successful dribbles | 39 | 100th percentile |
Touches in oppo. box | 99 | 94th percentile |

Duels won | Possession won in the final third | 95th percentile |
Blocks | 16 | 95th percentile |
Possession won in final third | 15 | 91st percentile |
While his goal contributions are impressive, Amorim will love Nypan’s possession won in the final third quality the most.
Ranking in the 91st percentile, Nypan shares this trait with Mount and it is likely one thing which will endear him to Amorim early on. Amad also has this quality, becoming adept at stealing the ball from defenders – something the new United are working hard to do.
Aside from Nypan’s off-the-ball talent, his technical ability and footballing IQ beyond his years are other reasons why the club will be so excited to sign him. Nypan has everything to become a great footballer and under Amorim, he could realise this potential.
