Ruben Amorim’s plan for Man United academy star who could follow in Kobbie Mainoo's footsteps

Sekou Kone has made a strong first impression at Manchester United following his summer arrival.

There has been a noticeable shift in transfer strategy under Ineos with Manchester United moving quickly to sign some of the world’s most exciting young talent.

Chido Obi could make his United debut soon after being poached from Arsenal over the summer. He signed alongside another promising teenager – Sekou Kone.

United beat several top European sides to sign Kone for just £1m this summer. The 18-year-old is viewed as a wonderkid with huge potential. It is now up to Ruben Amorim to unlock that potential.

Kone has settled down well at United but an injury early into his time at the club slightly delayed his progress. As he continues his journey to the first team, Amorim has already got a plan for the young midfielder.

Ruben Amorim’s plan for Sekou Kone at Man United

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey told United in Focus that Kone’s senior debut will likely come next season with the 2024/25 campaign used to settle him into the club and new surroundings.

But the 18-year-old has impressed staff at Carrington and there is a gap in midfield in Amorim’s squad that Kone will have his sights set on filling. With Casemiro likely to move on, Kone looks to be the perfect replacement.

According to GiveMeSport, Kone will get his chance to impress Amorim in pre-season, with the Portuguese head coach expected to include him in United’s touring squad.

The report adds that United’s coaching staff “believe he has the potential to thrive” in their system, but insist there is no need to rush his development and fast-track him to the first team.

Sekou Kone could follow in Kobbie Mainoo’s footsteps

A young midfielder arriving from the academy and impressing in United’s pre-season tour? Fans have seen this story before when Kobbie Mainoo burst onto the scene under Erik ten Hag.

Mainoo starred in United’s US tour in 2023 before becoming a key player in United’s first team in the following season.

Kone is a perfect partner for Mainoo and he now has the chance to follow in his footsteps if he can impress during United’s pre-season tour.

There is a good chance fans could even see Kone in action before pre-season, with United planning a post-season tour of Malaysia.
