'Underrated' Serie A star now reportedly wanted by Man City, years after Man Utd were forced to let him go

Manchester United are likely to be in the market for goalkeepers this summer and one former Old Trafford talent is turning heads.

The summer transfer window is drawing ever closer, and Manchester United will have major business to accomplish.

Ruben Amorim needs help this summer, and that means strengthening several positions.

The goalkeeper position could be one area of concern as rumours suggest that Andre Onana is wanted in Saudi Arabia.

Tom Heaton is expected to leave United on a free transfer this summer, whilst Altay Bayindir may want first-team action elsewhere.

That means United need to have goalkeeping targets in mind just as one former Old Trafford talent attracts interest in Italy.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s brief Manchester United spell

United fans will remember Adem Ljajic and Zoran Tosic as Sir Alex Ferguson moved into the Serbian market.

Serbian star Nemanja Vidic became a United hero after arriving from Russia and Ferguson looked at what else the Serbian market had to offer.

Those moves didn’t really work out; Ljajic saw his switch collapse and Tosic failed to make an impact.

2014 saw United move for another Serbian talent just a year after Ferguson’s retirement.

United snapped up goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic from Vojvodina, but allowed him to remain with the Serbian side for another year.

Sadly, Milinkovic-Savic was unable to obtain a work permit to play in England, and United were ultimately forced to let him go.

Milinkovic-Savic moved on to Lechia Gdansk as he waved goodbye to United without ever making an appearance.

That dream move to Old Trafford was over before it ever really began for Milinkovic-Savic, but he is excelling elsewhere.

Manchester City now eyeing Vanja Milinkovic-Savic

Milinkovic-Savic spent just 18 months in Poland as Torino pounced to bring him over to Italy.

That saw Vanja join his brother Sergeij Milinkovic-Savic in Serie A, but his path to stardom has been a long one.

Loan spells with SPAL, Ascoli and Standard Liege saw him make just 14 appearances, and he then played just eight times in the 2020-21 season at Torino.

Nobody could have predicted Milinkovic-Savic becoming a star from that point, but he has now become one of Serie A’s top goalkeepers.

Boss Paolo Vanoli has branded Milinkovic-Savic ‘underrated’, as quoted by Football Italia, and the giant 6ft 8in stopper is now attracting interest.

Tuttosport claim that Manchester City and Napoli are now looking to sign Milinkovic-Savic this summer.

City could cash in on Ederson and Milinkovic-Savic is one target to replace the Brazilian at the end of the season.

That is a testament to just how well Milinkovic-Savic has developed since seeing his United move go up in flames.

United may well face Milinkovic-Savic next season but, with so many goalkeepers potentially needed this summer, United would be wise to keep tabs on his situation and finally offer him the chance to play at Old Trafford.
