Report: Championship club could make surprise Wayne Rooney move, Man Utd interested in one of their players

Former Manchester United hero Wayne Rooney finds himself out of management again, but could yet return to the Championship.

Wayne Rooney won it all as a player, making himself a Manchester United hero after signing from Everton in 2004.

253 goals in 559 games across all competitions made Rooney a United legend as he became the club’s record goalscorer in January 2017.

Rooney’s playing career was simply incredible, but his managerial career has been a little more up-and-down.

Rooney initially impressed at Derby County, but spells in charge of D.C. United and Birmingham City didn’t go to plan.

Birmingham axed Rooney in January 2024, but that didn’t stop Plymouth Argyle from handing him another Championship job last summer.

Wayne Rooney eyed for shock Championship return

Rooney won just five of his 25 games as Pilgrims boss, leaving Argyle to sack Rooney in December.

The last couple of jobs just haven’t gone to plan for Rooney, but he could still return to Championship management next season.

TalkSPORT report that Rooney is under consideration to become Blackburn Rovers boss this summer.

It’s suggested that Rooney would be a real contender for the Rovers hot seat should Valerien Ismael lose his job.

Rovers only appointed Ismael in February, handing the Frenchman a three-and-a-half-year deal at Ewood Park.

Ismael has only won one game in eight, though, and already finds himself under pressure ahead of the summer transfer window.

If Rovers decide to make a change, which would be a huge surprise just weeks into Ismael’s reign, Rooney could be the shock choice to replace him.

Manchester United already want to sign a Blackburn Rovers ace

Rooney’s move to Blackburn may be a long shot at this stage, but if he does end up at Ewood Park, he may end up facing Manchester United interest in one Rovers ace.

Reports in March suggested that United are interested in Rovers goalkeeper Aynsley Pears ahead of the summer transfer window.

United are in the market for goalkeepers this summer and a homegrown option may be needed.

Tom Heaton is expected to leave United and Pears may be viewed as a replacement this summer.

Rooney may walk into that transfer battle if he takes the Blackburn job, and his situation is one to watch out for as the summer draws closer.
