Fabrizio Romano shares 'gone completely cold' update over £44m Man Utd star, potential transfer off

The goalkeeper situation at Manchester United remains firmly up in the air, with Andre Onana replacement talk intensifying.

Andre Onana experienced such a disastrous 2024-25 campaign that he can have zero complaints regarding the speculation surrounding his future this summer.

Manchester United’s stance is a willingness to keep Onana, however, linked to countless goalkeepers around the globe over the past few weeks suggests otherwise.

There have been strong suggestions that Emiliano Martinez is on United’s shortlist in the event a new number one is needed this summer, with the Argentine making it clear he wants a move to Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, United are very interested in Diogo Costa, with the Porto shot stopper tipped as a future world beater in goal.

There have been numerous other players mentioned at various times over the past few weeks, however, there is no sign of United needing to sign a starting goalkeeper.

Fabrizio Romano says Andre Onana to Monaco is off

While in an ideal world, Ruben Amorim would want a new goalkeeper, the United head coach has a strong working relationship with Onana, and therefore the Cameroonian isn’t going to be forced out this summer.

Onana shared his uncertainty over his United future, however, with a Saudi Arabian move looking unlikely, options for the 29-year-old have been slim. That was until Monaco emerged as an option for Onana.

Fabrizio Romano was quick to shoot Onana to Monaco down, and on Tuesday, the Italian transfer expert has reaffirmed that any chance of the deal happening.

Romano explains that Onana is not a concrete target for Monaco, with the situation described as having “gone completely cold”, which suggests there was something to the rumours at least.

In addition, on Tuesday, The Telegraph have claimed that Onana had been in initial personal terms talks with Monaco, however any deal has fallen through with wage demands cited as being the big stumbling block.

With this, a sale of Onana looks unlikely. For this scenario, United have a contingency plan.

Manchester United goalkeeper chase likely to be for a number two

Signing a new number one goalkeeper was never a given this summer as it all depended on whether Onana was sold or retained.

With Onana not leaving, United will move onto signing a new number two instead, to challenge the current starter for minutes over the coming seasons.

For this role, United have considered Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic, who has a gentlemen’s agreement with his club that he can leave this summer for £25m.

Meanwhile, Lucas Chevalier from Lille is another being considered that would be happy to fight for his place, but at £40m he would be too expensive to have on the bench, as is £44m Onana.
