Omar Berrada says Man Utd have signed a 'top player' who 'could have gone anywhere', he's the 'best example'

The future of Manchester United relies heavily on the next 12 months, and Ineos have an uphill fight to restore the club to greatness.

Since taking charge of the footballing operations at Manchester United, there have been a number of difficult decisions made by Ineos.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe oversaw countless hundreds of redundancies in an effort to slash spending as the club tumbled toward bankruptcy. In addition, Ineos raised ticket prices at Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe has argued that this has all been necessary in order to get the club’s spending in line with other teams and then they can begin to build for the future.

On the pitch, things have been a disaster, although Ratcliffe has revealed an admiration for Ruben Amorim as a manager, tipping him to turn things around.

However, in order to achieve this, Ineos have to back him in the transfer market and that is exactly what is happening this summer.

Omar Berrada says Matheus Cunha proves Manchester United’s pulling power

This summer, United have signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m. Following the Brazilian, United are close to adding Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for slightly more.

However, it is Cunha who the club has been full of praise for. Jason Wilcox compared Cunha with Eric Cantona which is extremely high praise from the director of football.

Now, club CEO Omar Berrada has also spoken glowingly about Cunha, in an interview with United We Stand magazine this month.

“The image of United is currently one of a club in decline,” Berrada explained.

“How difficult is it to find new sponsors against that backdrop and to attract players to want to play here?

“Starting with the players, the best example is Cunha, a top player that could have gone anywhere really.”

Cunha was the earliest United signing in a decade, joining on June 1st which was a real statement from the club, and now we know why. United needed to act fast to steal a march on other interested clubs.

Cunha decision shows his mentality is what Manchester United needs

United having no European football was always going to make recruitment difficult with Liam Delap rejecting the club in favour of Chelsea.

However, despite the current standing of the club, Cunha said choosing United was an easy decision, which is what the club would want to hear.

United didn’t want players who only wanted to sign for Champions League, with Amorim even warning Viktor Gyokeres not to join if that was his only motivation.

However, by choosing to join United this summer, Cunha is proving that he backs himself and the club to get back into Europe next season. This showcases the Brazilian’s self-belief which United needs right now.

With players like Cunha, United long-term will be back at Europe’s top table and players having a long-term vision will always pan out better for themselves.
