Antwerp agreed Senne Lammens transfer with another Premier League club, he only wanted to join Man Utd

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was insistent on a move to Old Trafford.

While he is yet to make his Manchester United debut, Senne Lammens was absolutely determined to join the Red Devils.

A frantic deadline day saw United strike a deal with Royal Antwerp to sign the Belgian goalkeeper, choosing him ahead of World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez.

It was a big decision, with United choosing the younger, longer term option instead of the quick fix who would have demanded high wages.

Antwerp had an agreement with Aston Villa

Antwerp were very happy with the deal, where they made a big profit on Lammens, having signed him on the cheap from Club Brugge in 2023.

But they could have made an even bigger profit, with a higher fee agreed with Aston Villa.

Villa had lined up a move for Lammens in the event Martinez signed for Manchester United.

United opted for Lammens instead, and this was the goalkeeper’s clear first choice too.

Antwerp general manager Sven Jacques told Het Laatste Nieuws: “We already had an agreement with Aston Villa. In those final days, it looked like Emiliano Martinez would leave. Only Senne himself didn’t want to go to Birmingham.

“Manchester United’s first offer only came after that agreement with Aston Villa. And that offer was considerably lower.”

He adds that once talks ramped up with United on deadline day, they were concluded swiftly due to the necessity of the time limits.

“We finally started talking to Manchester United. And about four hours later, we had an agreement on Lammens’ transfer.”

Senne Lammens waiting for chance

Senne Lammens sat out Manchester United’s games against Manchester City and Chelsea, two big matches, with Altay Bayindir preferred.

Now with Manchester United set to face Brentford and Sunderland, head coach Ruben Amorim has to decide whether it is time to throw him in.

The international break follows, with United returning with a home game against Liverpool. Sooner or later the Belgian will get his chance.

There has been speculation that United could make a further investment in another goalkeeper next summer.

But it is impossible to judge whether one is needed, without giving Lammens a proper shot.
