Man Utd youngster gets U20 World Cup call-up for his nation, chance to impress Ruben Amorim

Manchester United’s academy is packed with talented players who are highly rated by their own national teams.

Having an academy widely considered one of the best in England means that the players will also likely be vital for their countries.

The most clear example of this sees James Scanlon already a senior Gibraltar international, scoring for his country as a 17-year-old, ranking alongside Lamine Yamal for being a young senior scorer.

Manchester United also have several talents who are key for youth national sides, such as Tyler Fletcher with Scotland U19s, Jack Fletcher with England, and Gabriele Biancheri for Wales’ U21 side.

Last season, before he had officially joined, we got to see Diego Leon shine for Paraguay in the U20 South American championships.

Now, later this month, there will be one youngster from Carrington at the U20 World Cup.

James Overy is heading to the U20 World Cup with Australia

In the summer of 2024, United signed a young Australian full-back by the name of James Overy, following his move to the UK after exiting Perth Glory.

Overy was one of several wonderkid signings made by United that summer in a clear move toward bolstering the youth department. After joining, Overy was named one of the best 2007-born players in world football.

Now, Overy has the chance to prove himself on a world stage for Australia U20, as he is set to play in the U20 World Cup, which kicks off later this month, as confirmed by the Australian national team website.

Overy snubbed Scotland to get this call-up as he seemingly makes his intentions clear to represent Australia going forward.

Playing on such a big stage will allow Overy to catch the eye of the decision makers and push himself into first-team contention.

James Overy can show Manchester United how good he is with U20 World Cup displays

While it has been one year since Overy arrived at United, his ability has been largely unseen due to how little he has played.

Overy had a long-term injury lay-off last season, which spanned months, before he returned in February.

From then on, Overy had a steady campaign, playing minutes here and there at various levels. In April, Overy scored his first goal for United at an U18 level, and this was eye-catching as it showed a new quality.

Amorim had Overy in first-team training ahead of the Europa League final, and over the summer, Overy signed a new United contract, which showcases how impressed the club has been.

Now, there will be plenty of eyes at United watching Overy when Australia face Italy next Sunday, with Amorim likely to be among those keeping a keen eye on his progress.
