Both of United’s final Premier League matches of 2025 will be played at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils suffered defeat on their last outing away from home.

Aston Villa inflicted a 2-1 defeat on United at Villa Park ahead of Christmas, despite the Red Devils putting on a strong showing in the Premier League clash.

United’s Premier League loss to Villa followed on from the Red Devils’ thrilling 4-4 draw against Bournemouth at Old Trafford last week.

Lisandro Martinez made his first start of the Premier League season after Ruben Amorim shuffled his backline for the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old Manchester United defender has been easing back into the first-team squad with sporadic appearances after his return from a long-term injury.

United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, hailed the much-needed influence that Martinez brought to the defence in Amorim’s tactical system.

Another Red Devils supporter tweeted: “Oh, how I’ve missed Lisandro Martinez’s game presence at the back. Such a composed footballer.”

“I missed Lisandro Martinez so much,” somebody else suggested.

What happened in the Premier League match between Man Utd and Newcastle at Old Trafford?

United broke the deadlock inside the opening 25 minutes after Newcastle failed to effectively clear Diogo Dalot’s long throw-in into their box at Old Trafford.

Patrick Dorgu positioned himself perfectly under the Newcastle clearance and the United star smashed home a stunning first-time volley into the bottom left corner.

The 21-year-old Danish wing-back’s superb effort ensured that the Red Devils took a well-deserved 1-0 lead into the half-time break at Old Trafford on Friday evening.

United weathered the attacking fightback of Newcastle in the second half and the Red Devils walked away with all three Premier League points at Old Trafford.
