Barcelona's £138m problem casts doubt on Marcus Rashford joining from Man United

Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on loan for the 2025/26 season but the Spanish side have no obligation to buy him next summer.

Last season, Ruben Amorim froze Marcus Rashford out of the Manchester United squad after questioning his work rate behind the scenes.

Following a six-month loan at Aston Villa, Rashford joined Barcelona this summer and there is a £26m buy option included in the deal that can be triggered in the summer.

However, Barcelona are not obliged to do so, even if Rashford has enjoyed a brilliant start in Spain.

Barcelona’s transfer debt puts Marcus Rashford move in jeopardy

Reports coming out of Spain claim that Rashford is impressing at Barcelona, with manager Hansi Flick a huge admirer of the 27-year-old.

In 11 appearances this season, Rashford has already scored three goals and provided five assists for Barcelona.

Rashford wants to stay at Barcelona and it is up to him to convince the La Liga giants to make the deal permanent, but financial issues could stand in his way.

As pointed out by the Daily Mail, Barcelona have built up £138 million worth of transfer debt in payments still owed to other clubs.

Barcelona are obliged to pay £121 million of that figure by the end of the season, which could deplete their budget before the summer window.

Man United have already replaced Marcus Rashford

United decided to overhaul their attacking department this summer, with Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Antony and Jadon Sancho all leaving.

The Red Devils spent £232m this summer, which includes three big-money signings for attackers.

Matheus Cunha was “fantastic” against Liverpool, Bryan Mbeumo has made a roaring start to his United career and Benjamin Sesko has already netted twice in the Premier League.

Even if Rashford’s Barcelona deal falls through, United have already moved on and it feels impossible for him to work his way back into the side under Amorim.
