Man Utd had one of the best youngsters in the world in 2019, now he’s bottom of the Championship

The 2025 Golden Boy top 25 has now been confirmed and only one Manchester United player is included.

12 months ago, Manchester United boasted three of the top 25 Golden Boys; however, Alejandro Garnacho was sold, and Kobbie Mainoo’s struggles have seen him drop out.

Only Leny Yoro is in the top 25 Golden Boys this season from Old Trafford, which is a situation that Ruben Amorim needs to address going forward, with his lack of youth usage concerning.

However, a Golden Boy nomination doesn’t guarantee a player will become top class, just as United’s inclusions in the class of 2019 prove.

Tahith Chong was a Golden Boy nominee

Going back to 2019, Manchester United had two players in the top 80 of the Golden Boy, with Diogo Dalot joined by Tahith Chong.

While the name has long become unassociated with United, Chong was once the most exciting youngster at the club.

Juventus had been keen to sign Chong at one point in his career. While Chong was even considered for the United number seven shirt.

Chong was among the top 25 wonderkids in world football back in 2019, with every United fan excited by his potential.

However, Chong departed for Birmingham in 2022 where he then earned a move to Luton, but he now sits at a career low point.

Tahith Chong is bottom of the Championship with Sheffield United

Chong played when United beat PSG in the Champions League, which will undoubtedly be a career high for the Curacao-born winger.

Ultimately, it was an ACL injury that likely stopped Chong from reaching his potential; however, now at Sheffield United, he is in grave danger of heading to League One.

Sheffield United sit bottom of the Championship after nine games, with the Blades only scoring three goals in a campaign that looks destined for relegation.

Chong has been a poor performer for Sheffield, barely playing. Which just goes to show how little the Golden Boy award means for a player’s future.
