Alejandro Garnacho’s first real test post-Manchester United could show his major flaws if he does leave Chelsea after one season and pack his bags for Argentina.
The 21-year-old Spain-born attacker received a ‘fresh start’ in the 2025-26 Premier League season after Chelsea signed him for a £40m transfer fee last summer.
Alejandro Garnacho had the chance to prove himself away from Old Trafford after his dynamic with Ruben Amorim sealed the end of his Manchester United career.
However, fast-forward nine months since his Man Utd exit and Garnacho’s debut season at Stamford Bridge seems to be dangling by a knife-edge at the moment.

River Plate are exploring former Man Utd star Alejandro Garnacho as a transfer option amid his Chelsea woes
Alejandro Garnacho has only netted eight times and picked up four assists in 37 matches across all competitions for Chelsea since last summer’s high-profile move.
The Manchester United youth academy product has struggled to stand out from the crowd at Stamford Bridge and Garnacho’s woes have continued to haunt him.
Chelsea could look at other options for how to handle Garnacho’s future in the summer if the former Man Utd winger fails to impress in the tail end of this season.
River Plate could be one option for Garnacho now, with the Argentine club reportedly interested in landing the 2025 Blues summer signing.
As per Sport Witness, TyC Sports reporter Gonzalo Carol said on live Argentinian television that River Plate are monitoring the situation around Garnacho.
It has been reported that River Plate boss Eduardo Coudet has ‘made contact’ with the Argentina international and Chelsea would be open to a 12-month loan deal.

Man Utd’s cash injection from the Alejandro Garnacho sale to Chelsea has only reinforced their smart call
Garnacho was nothing more than pure profit for the Red Devils thanks to the Premier League’s existing Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
While he was once adored by United fans at Old Trafford, Garnacho’s woes at the Premier League club now seem like a distant memory amid the 2025-26 season.
Garnacho is fighting for his future at Chelsea and a move to River Plate would only reinforce how far the ex-Red Devils talent has truly fallen in less than 12 months.
The biggest kick in the teeth would be for Chelsea if they tried to cash in on the Argentina winger, with United only benefiting from a potential sale of the player
United negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of their deal and a Garnacho exit from Chelsea would only top up the £40m cash incentive already secured.
River Plate’s reported deal would only be a loan, but it wouldn’t be far from Garnacho having one foot out of the door at Stamford Bridge.
