Troy Deeney left out Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes from his picks for BBC Sport’s Premier League Team of the Week after Manchester United’s win over Liverpool.
Manchester United made an impactful start against Liverpool after Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock with a superb strike at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, was denied a record-tying 20th Premier League assist at the weekend, despite playing a key part in United’s second against Liverpool.
Freddie Woodman tipped Fernandes’ header onto Benjamin Sesko, who bundled the ball in from close range to put United 2-0 up after only 14 minutes into the clash.

Forget Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, Troy Deeney names Man Utd star Kobbie Mainoo in his Team of the Week
Despite the influences of Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes at the weekend, neither Manchester United player made the final cut for BBC’s Team of the Week.
However, BBC Sport pundit Troy Deeney did include Kobbie Mainoo in his Premier League Team of the Week after the Man Utd star’s impact at Old Trafford.
Kobbie Mainoo impressed United fans with another strong performance under Michael Carrick after his resurgence in form at the Premier League club.
Speaking in his BBC Sport column, Deeney said: “When you look at the back end of the season compared to the start of the season, it has been night and day.
“It just shows what a bit of love and care can do to somebody. I’m not willing to say Mainoo is the man yet – I think we have to see more of a body of work – but I would say the win against Liverpool was the best performance I’ve seen him have in a United shirt.”
What impressed Troy Deeney the most about Kobbie Mainoo’s Man Utd performance against Liverpool
Kobbie Mainoo saw out the full 90 minutes for Man Utd at the weekend alongside Casemiro and was a key influence on the pitch for the Red Devils in their tie.
Deeney admitted that the 21-year-old United and England midfielder put on the “most complete performance” that he has seen from him in his Red Devils career.
“Dominated the game, made some big tackles, passing forward, breaking up the play, but also coming with the goal,” he continued.
“The most complete performance from him, I thought he was excellent.”
United will now travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon and the Red Devils will face Premier League side Sunderland in a 3pm kick-off time.
