Why Atletico Madrid withdrew from Ederson race and switched focus to another Man Utd-linked midfielder

Atletico Madrid paved the way for Manchester United to sign Ederson after pulling out of the race to sign the Atalanta and Brazil midfielder, according to reports.

Manchester United are poised to land Ederson once the summer transfer window opens after the Red Devils were reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ over a deal.

According to BBC Sport on Wednesday, the Red Devils are prepared to spend an initial £35m fee and agree to a further £3m in add-ons to sign the Brazilian.

Ederson is in the final 12 months of his current contract with the Serie A side and United have identified him as a key midfield target for this summer.

Atletico Madrid were linked with Ederson, but the La Liga club’s transfer approach has now shifted

Ederson has been linked with Manchester United in the past and the 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder has been with Italian side Atalanta since 2022.

The Man Utd-linked midfielder, who won’t represent Brazil at this summer’s World Cup, has made 180 appearances for the Serie A outfit and has netted 16 times.

According to ESPN, United made the decision to ‘swoop’ in for Ederson after Spanish side Atletico Madrid’s ‘proposed move’ for the Atalanta star had ‘stalled.’

The publication reports that the La Liga club have switched their attention elsewhere now amid United agreeing personal terms with Brazil midfielder Ederson.

Atletico Madrid are now targeting Wolves and Brazil midfielder Joao Gomes amid Man Utd’s race to sign Ederson

ESPN added that Atletico now have their eyes on Joao Gomes and are prepared to explore a potential move for the 25-year-old Brazil and Wolves star.

Joao Gomes had been linked with United during the 2025-26 campaign, with the Red Devils exploring different options over this summer’s important midfield rebuild.

The Brazil international is under contract with Wolves until 2030 and has made 130 appearances for the Premier League club since his 2023 arrival from Flamengo.

United are expected to let Manuel Ugarte leave Old Trafford in the summer and Casemiro will bow out of the Premier League club as a free agent in June.
