Why Manchester United fans will have to wait weeks for Youri Tielemans' debut

Manchester United have completed the signing of Youri Tielemans but he will not make his first appearance anytime soon.

Youri Tielemans has become Manchester United’s third signing of the summer transfer window after completing a £35 million move from Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford and will add some much-needed experience and quality to Michael Carrick’s midfield department.

But Carrick will have to wait before seeing his new Belgian midfielder in action.

Youri Tielemans will be granted an extended summer break

Just like the 14 Manchester United players at the 2026 World Cup this summer, Tielemans will not be thrown straight into pre-season training this summer.

Tielemans travelled to Carrington to finalise his deal, but he will now be granted a break to help him recover from his World Cup campaign.

The Belgium star played a key role in his country’s run to the quarter-finals of the tournament, before sitting out of their last-eight clash against Spain after picking up an injury in the pre-match warm-up.

But Tielemans still played 475 minutes in the summer tournament, captaining Belgium to the quarter-finals.

His hamstring tweak before facing Spain will make United extra cautious about when he will begin pre-season training.

When Youri Tielemans could make his Man United debut

United have six pre-season fixtures to look forward to this summer, with the first coming this weekend against Championship side Wrexham in Finland.

Andrey Santos could make his debut for United against Wrexham because he was rested over the summer, but Tielemans will have to wait.

Expect Tielemans to be rested until at least United’s final three pre-season fixtures, which all take place in August.

With the 2026/27 Premier League season set to start on August 22 away to Hull City, Carrick will likely build up Tielemans’ fitness in the same month the new campaign starts.
