David Moyes could finally manage Michael Carrick’s failed Man Utd pick for Ballon d’Or award

Everton manager David Moyes could potentially cross paths with a former Manchester United star that Michael Carrick played alongside at Old Trafford.

David Moyes will be in the opposing dugout seat to Michael Carrick on Sunday for the Red Devils’ Premier League visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Everton boss is all too familiar with Carrick after he faced him last season and coached the Manchester United legend after he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson.

Moyes’ reign at United ended in 2014 after 10 months in charge and the 63-year-old Scotsman would miss out on crossing paths with Anthony Martial at Old Trafford.

Once a Man Utd teammate of Michael Carrick, Anthony Martial could make the move to Everton to play under David Moyes

Not only did Michael Carrick play alongside Anthony Martial, but the current Manchester United manager coached him during his time at the Red Devils.

Former United striker Martial is currently a free agent after his summer exit from Liga MX club Monterrey, following the agreed termination of his contract.

The 30-year-old Frenchman has been away from Old Trafford since 2024 after his contract with the Premier League club expired and he left United on a free transfer.

According to TEAMtalk, Martial is now believed to be ‘looking for a route’ back to the Premier League after his brief spell with Mexican side Monterrey ended.

The publication reports that David Moyes’ Everton side are one of the Premier League clubs linked with Martial, despite the summer window shutting on Tuesday.

Everton are not the only Premier League club interested in former Man Utd striker Anthony Martial

Moyes’ sacking for United paved the way for Louis van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford and the Dutchman was in charge when Martial was signed from Monaco in 2015.

Martial did show moments of brilliance at United, but the former France international’s run was held back by his inconsistencies and injury setbacks.

Rio Ferdinand once revealed that former Man Utd and England teammate Carrick had backed Martial to win France Football’s prized Ballon d’Or award.

“You know, Carrick said to me when he first signed that Martial could win the Ballon d’Or,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents back in February.

TEAMtalk added that Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Newcastle, Sunderland and Tottenham are other Premier League clubs that are interested in Martial.

It has been claimed that the approach from different Premier League sides means that they are aware Martial is available rather than actively pursuing him.

However, TEAMtalk reports that Everton have suggested that they were not contacted through ‘intermediaries’ over a potential move for Martial.
