Manchester United’s 2027 transfer plan is expected to be dominated by a complete defensive rebuild, with outgoings equally as vital as incomings.
After overhauling the midfield and attack, next on the agenda will be defence, and Manchester United are long overdue for a facelift in the department. It remains shocking that Michael Carrick’s preferred defence is the exact four that Erik ten Hag lost 4-0 with in 2022 – four years ago.
This is an embarrassment with Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, and Luke Shaw; proven time and time again, they cannot be trusted. Matthijs de Ligt would be starting if fit, but he has missed coming up on a year of action. While Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven remain youngsters.

While Maguire and Martinez are set to see their contracts expire as of right now, they could end up being joined heading out the door by Leny Yoro, as per Graeme Bailey.
This is because Yoro is now said to be playing for his future as United assesses long-term plans in the defence, which could see the decision made to move on from the Frenchman if his third season is a bust.
Carrick remains confident of Yoro’s future and his ability, but at the end of the day, he isn’t playing anywhere near often enough to develop or make the steps he needs and should probably have gone on loan to get that experience.
Yoro was great against Sabah, deserved a start in the derby, but was dropped. He then struggled alongside Heaven against Brighton and again was absent against Fulham, all the while Maguire and Martinez ship goal after goal.
It feels very much that Maguire and Martinez, as the two senior centre-backs, can do no wrong at United under Carrick, and he will always start them regardless of form or struggles, which absolutely do exist as they’ve been pretty awful this season.
United’s only clean sheet came with Yoro in the side, which alone is reason to try that pairing of him and Martinez again. It might have only been Sabah, but it warrants trying with how bad Maguire has been.
Yoro arrived for £51m and hasn’t ever looked worth that much. Yoro was supposed to define the era of Ineos and was viewed as a big statement, beating Real Madrid to his signature. Only for injury to spoil his first season, and he’s never gotten a proper chance since.
Last season, Carrick saw Yoro shine with a run of games and yet refuses to give the 21-year-old more of this, then wonders why he looks shaky when thrown on for 10 minutes here and there. Yoro needs to be playing and should be playing over Maguire this season, given he can hardly do worse, and any errors can go down to being beneficial due to development.
United will see Yoro go and excel elsewhere if he doesn’t play and departs after this season. So while he has the chance, Carrick needs to commit to the future instead of living in the past with Maguire.
United will be much better for it.
