'Hardest player': 60m Manchester United target praised as manager sets out stance

Manchester United may face a tough challenge to prise striker Goncalo Ramos away from Benfica this summer.

While last week The Mail reported that Benfica may be willing to accept just £60 million for the Portugal international striker.

However, their manager is not keen on losing his star striker, after a terrific campaign in which he scored 27 club goals in all competitions.

CMJornal reports Roger Schmidt has made clear to Benfica bosses that he wants Goncalo Ramos to stay next season, viewing him as a ‘core player’ in his plans.

Goncalo Ramos praised

Ramos has made a name for himself this past season, on the international stage too. His hat-trick for Portugal in the World Cup last 16 against Switzerland demonstrated his ability.

His domestic form has seen him earn praise. Portimonense defender Park Ji-Soo told O Jogo that Ramos was the most challenging player he had to face last season.

He said: “I think that Gonçalo Ramos, who scored against us in that match, was the hardest player to counter, to annul.

“As everyone knows, he is a young player, a very good scorer and has a promising future ahead of him.”

Ramos is one Manchester United’s list of possible striker targets, which also includes Rasmus Hojlund and Randal Kolo Muani.

Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane are estimated to be unattainable, either due to price tag, or reluctance to sell.

Benfica’s manager Roger Schmidt is challenging his club to place Ramos in the same category, which may leave Manchester United having to pay his release clause of around £104 million.
