Gary Lineker 'amused' by red card against Man Utd labelled one of the 'most ridiculous in Premier League history'

Manchester United have had some hot-heads during their history as a club.

As good as a passionate player can be in a first-team squad, they can also have major repercussions. Manchester United have had players in abundance over the years who had the potential to lose their cool.

The likes of Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Nemanja Vidic and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are just a few legendary names that spring to mind. As good as these players were – they all had a tendency to get a little hot-headed.

Much like a player who played against Manchester United in many battles – but one time lost his head so much that it produced a simply ‘ridiculous’ Premier League red card.

Steven Gerrard red card against Manchester United

In what was a comical red card, Steven Gerrard entered the frame at Anfield at half-time with the home side a goal down thanks to a Juan Mata strike.

Just 38 seconds into the half, Gerrard goes clattering into the United goalscorer before immediately after stamping on fellow Spaniard Ander Herrera – which resulted in one of the quickest, and from United fans’ perspectives, most comical red cards in Premier League history.

Mata then went on to score THAT bicycle kick to give United a famous win at Anfield. Sorry – Juan-field.

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards reminisce on Steven Gerrard red card

Speaking on the Match Of The Day Top 10’s, Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker all sat down to speak about the ‘most ridiculous red cards in Premier League history’.

They all agreed that the Gerrard incident was right up there and had the following discussion about the incident:

“The Steven Gerrard one amused me,” Lineker began. “Something had got to him and he’d obviously woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning.”

Micah Richards responded: “He was on the bench wasn’t he?”

“He’s obviously been frustrated being left on the bench and he’s come on, he’s a skipper, he’s riled up, and there were actually two challenges wasn’t there?

“The first one he got away with but the second was just a stamp on [Ander] Herrera I think it was.”

Shearer concluded: “He left one or two in now and again. Most great midfielders would have to do that from time to time.”

It is a memory that will live on in Manchester United’s fans’ heads for a while. It was a ridiculous moment from the former Liverpool captain.
