Wayne Rooney has raised his concerns about a deep issue at Manchester United after Ruben Amorim’s men lost in their Premier League clash against Brentford.
Brentford hosted Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium and the Bees came from 1-0 down and defeated the Red Devils 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils tasted their 16th Premier League loss of their woeful 2024-25 season on the weekend and United have won only 10 league matches from 35 fixtures.
United languish in 15th place in the Premier League table and the Red Devils have only three league matches remaining in their current league campaign.
Ruben Amorim’s men are now unable to climb into the top half of the table and the Red Devils will end the campaign with their worst finish in the Premier League era.
United’s season hinges on their success in the Europa League and the Red Devils must lift the trophy if they are to secure any European football for next season.
The Europa League would offer United a route back to the Champions League and Amorim would also lift his first major silverware as United manager at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s side are in the Europa League semi-finals and United defeated 10-man Athletic Club 3-0 in the first-leg tie at the San Mames Stadium last Thursday.

Wayne Rooney cannot overlook one thing facing both Man Utd and Ruben Amorim after the Premier League defeat vs Brentford
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day 2, Danny Murphy was critical of Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and his tactics in the defeat to Brentford on Sunday.
“I get that there’s young players, I understand that and they’re playing against good teams,” he said, as per Goal.
“But he [Amorim] only plays one system, he’s not mixing things up, personnel and system and he’s been there a while now.
“When you play a system that much and you work on it in training, surely we can see more improvement, irrelevant of who is playing because they should be organised in that system.”
Amorim rotated his United first-team squad for the Premier League visit to the Gtech Community Stadium ahead of the upcoming Europa League tie against Athletic Club.
The 40-year-old ex-Sporting CP manager offered minutes to different United youth academy players against Brentford, including Chido Obi-Martin and Tyler Fredricson.
Wayne Rooney suggested that he found it “strange” the different formation between the Red Devils’ youth academy team and the United first team at Old Trafford.
Responding to Danny Murphy, the United legend said: “You’d think so, but I think the second team are playing a back four, which I found strange, because those players who are coming into the first team now with the under-23s or under-21s are playing a different system.
“For me, that’s a bit confusing. Getting to the Europa League final is papering over a lot of cracks for Manchester United and that needs solving quickly.”

Following United’s 4-3 Premier League defeat to Brentford, Amorim insisted that it is important for the youth players to pick up first-team minutes and experience.
“Yeah, it’s really important because you can train a lot with the first team, but to have that feeling, playing with the players, feeling the players, the speed of the game, I think is the best thing,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“So, again, I think they did quite well. Chido [Obi] fought all the game, but you can feel it is really naive sometimes in the way he puts his body.
“He’s going to understand what is the feeling of playing in these kind of games. This is the best way.
“So, we can take that as a positive, but the rest we lose. We didn’t win points, so it’s just that.”
United will now host La Liga outfit Athletic Club for the second-leg Europa League semi-final showdown at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
