Manchester United officials will be feeling smug about their decision to appoint Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the season.
When Ineos pulled the trigger, United fans questioned Ruben Amorim’s sacking and the direction that the club was headed in.
But back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Arsenal mean that Michael Carrick has enjoyed a dream start to his spell as head coach.
After wins vs City and Arsenal… should Michael Carrick get the Man Utd permanent job?
Have your say!
When Carrick was appointed, Jason Wilcox explained that United wanted someone familiar with the club to step in and take charge, and so far it has proven to be the right decision.
The boos aimed at Liverpool boss Arne Slot in recent weeks can almost be heard from Manchester, and now United’s arch-rivals could copy Ineos’ Carrick decision.

Liverpool could copy Michael Carrick move if Arne Slot is sacked
Slot was left seething at United when Ruben Amorim’s side won at Anfield earlier in the season, and reigning champions Liverpool now find themselves below the Red Devils in the Premier League table.
Liverpool are yet to win a Premier League match in 2026, and it means Slot is under huge pressure.
How many points will United get from our next five games?
It's been a perfect start for Michael Carrick, will it continue? Which games are you worried about?
According to Football 365, Steven Gerrard is ‘very keen’ on returning to Liverpool if Slot is fired.
Sacking a failed managerial appointment and hiring a club legend midfielder in his stead for the rest of the season? Sounds familiar.
If Gerrard does step in to replace Slot, it means he could go head-to-head with Carrick at Old Trafford when Liverpool face United in May.
Michael Carrick managerial record vs Steven Gerrard
Gerrard took his first managerial job in 2018 at Rangers, the same year Carrick retired and joined Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at Old Trafford.
In Scotland, Gerrard won the Scottish Championship with Rangers, but then left on sour terms to join Aston Villa where he ultimately flopped.
In the meantime, Carrick gained priceless experience working under Mourinho and then was a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff at United.
Carrick had his first United caretaker stint in 2021, and that ultimately led to his appointment at Middlesbrough in 2022 where he managed for three years.
Carrick boasts a 47.52% win rate as a manager across 141 games, while Gerrard has a 55% win rate, heavily inflated by his time at Rangers.
