David Moyes says there’s another role he almost had at Man Utd before becoming Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor

Everton manager David Moyes has made a major admission about a Manchester United role that he was once offered before he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as Manchester United manager and the 84-year-old backed his fellow Scotsman to replace him in the Old Trafford hot seat.

David Moyes had impressed in his first managerial spell at Everton before he succeeded Ferguson at United after the 2012-13 Premier League campaign.

However, the 63-year-old Scot lasted only 10 months in charge at the Red Devils before Moyes’ ill-fated spell at Old Trafford ended with his sacking in 2014.

Everton boss David Moyes almost became Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man at Man Utd

David Moyes made a name for himself at Preston North End in the late 1990s and early 2000s before the former Manchester United manager moved to Everton.

However, Moyes’ success as a manager saw him linked with a move to Old Trafford long before Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out as Man Utd manager.

Speaking to former United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney, Moyes admitted that he was offered the opportunity to become Red Devils assistant manager.

“And I went to see Sir Alex a couple of times about jobs I’d been offered,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“And he said, ‘No, I’m not sure you should take that job. And different things.’

“And actually, I had a big chance to become Manchester United assistant manager before that as well.”

Why did David Moyes not become Man Utd assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford?

Moyes admitted that he did not regret not taking the United assistant boss role at Old Trafford after Everton came knocking for him while he was at Preston North End.

“And it didn’t pan out,” he added.

“So, when Everton came along, it just felt right at the time.”

Moyes bounced back from his setback at United in 2013 and went on to manage the likes of Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham, as well as Everton for the second time.
