Ineos’ expected acquisition of Ederson is reinforced by what the Atalanta and Brazil midfielder can bring to the table for Manchester United manager Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils have wasted no time ahead of the summer transfer window opening on 15th June and midfielder Ederson is now primed for a move to Manchester United.
United have agreed a £35m transfer fee, including a further £3m in add-ons, after they held advanced talks around Atalanta and Brazil star Ederson in late May.
Ederson will be the first major signing of Michael Carrick’s reign as the permanent Manchester United manager after the Red Devils legend succeeded Ruben Amorim.

Former Corinthians boss Tiago Nunes broke down what made Man Utd-bound Ederson such a special midfielder
Before Ederson made his name at Serie A side Atalanta, the 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder had been playing for the likes of Salernitana and Corinthians.
During his time in his native homeland in Brazil, Ederson’s development as a midfielder advanced amid Tiago Nunes’ managerial reign at Corinthians.
While Ederson has been coming into his own at Atalanta since 2022, Tiago Nunes explained that the Brazil international excelled in two different ways as a midfielder.
“He has two main strengths,” Nunes said in 2024, as per Sky Sports.
“Firstly, on the pitch, he has great physical strength, with the ability to play box-to-box, back and forth, sustaining the pace of the game.
“Secondly, he has a very strong mentality, with a very clear awareness of what he wants.”
Ederson’s strengths set him up to replace Manuel Ugarte at Man Utd and fill the void left behind by Casemiro
Ederson is far from a like-for-like replacement for outgoing Man Utd midfielder Casemiro, whose current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of June.
However, the Atalanta man can bring the physicality element that Michael Carrick has benefited from during Casemiro’s resurgence at Man Utd in the 2025-26 season.
Ederson’s two strengths, on the other hand, feel like the perfect upgrade to the role that Manuel Ugarte is meant to have in the United first-team squad at Old Trafford.
Manuel Ugarte has been linked with an exit from United and Carrick’s reluctance to use the 25-year-old Uruguayan defensive midfielder spoke volumes last season.
However, it now feels that Ederson can not only match Casemiro’s skills in some ways, but he comes across as a more complete version than Ugarte for Carrick’s Man Utd tactics.
