Michael Carrick is entering his first full season as Manchester United’s permanent head coach.
No Premier League manager earned more points than Michael Carrick did following his appointment as Manchester United interim last season.
Carrick took charge and led the Red Devils to a third-place finish in the 2025/26 Premier League season. An official decision was made to hire Carrick permanently, and now he is part of a very new-look ‘Big Six’ next season.
The Premier League title race is wide open, but rival fans are already confident that Carrick won’t win trophies at United.

Rival fans are already doubting Michael Carrick
United fans wanted Carrick to stay after his success last season, and now he is preparing for his first full campaign.
It is well-known that United want to win the Premier League by 2028, and Carrick’s contract means he will be in charge of that title push.
But rival fans are sure he is going to fall short. Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher led the discussion that Carrick will not win a league title.
“I personally just don’t think Carrick’s got that stardust as a manager to win a Champions League or a Premier League.” – Jamie Carragher
Fans representing Manchester City and Tottenham predicted that Carrick will be sacked in 2026/27. The Aston Villa fan representative echoed Carragher’s argument that Carrick will not win a major trophy.
Michael Carrick can use underdog status as an advantage
Defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City are dominating the talk as title favourites, but that should allow United to play without pressure.
Carrick has already proven he is an elite manager last season, with several impressive results against ‘Big Six’ opponents.
The biggest challenge in 2026/27 will be juggling four competitions and two matches every week, and Carrick has asked for more signings to add more depth to his squad.

If Ineos deliver and United enter the season with quality options in every position, then Carrick can embrace the underdog status and be the surprise package of next season.
It is easily overlooked that four of United’s ‘Big Six’ rivals are playing under new managers: Andoni Iraola at Liverpool, Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, Enzo Maresca at Manchester City and Roberto De Zerbi with Tottenham.
